  10.        This chapter lists information that is supplemental to the
  11.        _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_o_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e and the
  12.        installation instructions in the _P_e_r_s_o_n_a_l _S_y_s_t_e_m
  13.        _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e.  The information listed here is
  14.        product-specific; use it with either of those Guides to
  15.        install this product.

  17.        2.1  _I_R_I_X__I_M__D_e_v_e_l_o_p_m_e_n_t__E_n_v_i_r_o_n_m_e_n_t__S_u_b_s_y_s_t_e_m_s

  19.        The motif_dev includes these subsystems:

  21.        _m_o_t_i_f__d_e_v._m_a_n._d_e_v             Preformatted reference manual
  22.                                      pages.  This subsystem is
  23.                                      intended to be installed on
  24.                                      systems that _d_o _n_o_t have the
  25.                                      _n_r_o_f_f text formatting program.
  26.                                      There is no reason to install
  27.                                      both this and
  28.                                      _m_o_t_i_f__d_e_v._m_a_n._d_e_v_m_a_n_s_r_c.

  30.        _m_o_t_i_f__d_e_v._m_a_n._d_e_v_m_a_n_s_r_c       Source for the reference
  31.                                      manual pages.  This subsystem
  32.                                      is intended to be installed on
  33.                                      systems that _d_o have the _n_r_o_f_f
  34.                                      text formatting program.  This
  35.                                      subsystem takes less disk
  36.                                      space, displays better looking
  37.                                      manual pages (especially the
  38.                                      tables), and displays them
  39.                                      faster than the preformatted
  40.                                      manual pages.  There is no
  41.                                      reason to install both this
  42.                                      and _m_o_t_i_f__d_e_v._m_a_n._d_e_v.

  44.        _m_o_t_i_f__d_e_v._m_a_n._r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s        Motif developer release notes.

  110.        This section lists the subsystems (and their sizes) of the
  111.        IRIX IM Development Environment.

  113.        You can use the software installation instructions in the
  114.        _P_e_r_s_o_n_a_l _S_y_s_t_e_m _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e to install this
  115.        product.  If you are installing this software for the first
  116.        time, the default subsystems are installed if you click the
  117.        _I_n_s_t_a_l_l _A_u_t_o_m_a_t_i_c_a_l_l_y button.  To install a different set of
  118.        subsystems, click the _C_u_s_t_o_m_i_z_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n button and make
  119.        your new selections.  Then click the _S_t_a_r_t button to launch
  120.        the installation.

  156.        All of the subsystems for the IRIX IM Development
  157.        Environment can be installed using IRIX.  You do not need to
  158.        use the miniroot. Refer to the _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n
  159.        _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_o_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e or the installation instructions in
  160.        the _P_e_r_s_o_n_a_l _S_y_s_t_e_m _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for complete
  161.        installation instructions.

  163.        2.4  _P_r_e_r_e_q_u_i_s_i_t_e_s

  165.        To use the 1.2.4-6.2 release of the IRIX IM Development
  166.        Environment, your workstation must:
  167.  
  168.           +o Be running IRIX release IRIX 6.2 or later.
  169.  
  170.           +o Have _m_o_t_i_f__e_o_e._s_w._e_o_e (which contains the run-time
  171.             shared libraries) installed.
  172.  
  173.           +o Have _m_o_t_i_f__e_o_e._s_w._u_i_l (which contains the _u_i_l compiler)
  174.             installed for _u_i_l-based development.

  176.        2.5  _C_o_m_p_a_t_i_b_i_l_i_t_y
  177.  
  178.           +o IRIX IM in IRIX 6.2 is based on OSF/Motif 6.2 It also
  179.             has up to date bug fixes and some SGI extensions.

  181.           +o A static shared library, binary identical to that
  182.             provided with IRIX 4.0.5, is included with the
  183.             _m_o_t_i_f__e_o_e software.  In this release, you cannot link
  184.             for that version of the shared library (except by using
  185.             the available IRIX 4 Compatibility Build Environment).
  186.             Motif binary applications that were linked for that

  202.             neither the bug fixes nor the new features that are

  205.           +o If your application was linked with pre-5.0 static
  206.             shared libraries, the application must be linked with
  207.             the libraries from this release to get the new features
  208.             and bug fixes.

  210.           +o Programs built with this software are intended to
  211.             execute against an X11R5 server, such as one running
  212.             IRIX 6.2.  Programs built with this software are
  213.             believed to also execute properly against an X11R4
  214.             server, such as those running IRIX 4.0.x releases, but
  215.             that capability has not been well tested, and is
  216.             therefore not guaranteed.

  218.           +o Due to changes in the ._u_i_d file format as of IRIX 5.0,
  219.             you cannot use the _u_i_l that comes with this software to
  220.             build ._u_i_d files to use on IRIX 4.0 or earlier
  221.             releases.

  223.           +o Due to changes in executable file format as of IRIX
  224.             5.0, you cannot use this software to build programs to
  225.             execute on IRIX 4.0 or earlier releases.

  227.           +o For the most part, Motif programs and Imakefiles or
  228.             Makefiles should work unchanged in this release.  That
  229.             is, bringing a program up to this level should be a
  230.             simple recompile.  Exceptions:
  231.  
  232.                - The compilers are stricter about type checking.
  233.                  Some header files have had types changed.
  234.                  Programs that used approved typedef'd symbols
  235.                  should have no problem.  Programs that declared
  236.                  variables with basic _C data types instead of using
  237.                  the X11 typedef's might need to be changed.
  238.  
  239.                - The default option menu label is now _o_p_t_i_o_n_L_a_b_e_l.
  240.                  It was null in previous releases.  This means that
  241.                  now the (probably unwanted) string _o_p_t_i_o_n_L_a_b_e_l is
  242.                  visible, and unless you explicitly set that
  243.                  string, it takes up more space than before.

  248.        The _i_m_a_k_e configuration files that are installed in
